Description
Designed by Denver architects Marean & Norton, in collaboration with Chicago architect Edward H. Bennet, the Greek Theater was completed in 1918 fulfilling Bennett's vision of commemorating park benefactors and providing an open air theater. The Greek Theater included murals by local artist Allen True, who would be commissioned in later years to paint murals in the State Capitol Rotunda and the nearby Brown Palace Hotel lobby.
In 2010, $9.5 million dollars was spent to restore The Greek Theatre and the Voorhies Memorial. Because of their age, the heavy use of these facilities, and past funding challenges, these structures were deteriorating and needed special maintenance. The building's stone blocks were scaling and chipping, some blocks had shifted out of place, and sections of railing were chipped and broken. Water and moisture eroded into the structures, causing damage. Existing paint and plaster finishes were peeling. The restoration work included cleaning, patching, replacing, re-pointing of joints, de-scaling of stone, and other procedures for the complete restoration of all of the stone, brick, and plaster.
I took this photo in November 2013.
Denver, brimming with life and commerce. There is an interesting balance in this city, the midnight tokers and the businessman walking up and down the streets. Metal, and trees...a balance that still retains nature.

Thank you Michael! This theatre is gorgeous, I have been practicing how I capture architecture...I cannot help but admire the creativity and workmanship. Then...how time effects it.

Thank you Rolando! I was reaching into what the place would look throughout time...with the world changing but stone staying the same.
